Also in 2013, Dr. Nigel Gericke received the South African Indigenous Plant Use Forum (IPUF) Best Product Award for his development work taking an indigenous plant from concept to clinical trial.

Sceletium tortuosum eine rare Pflanze

The genus Sceletium of the family Aizoaceae Mesembryanthemoideae is characterized by the distinct skeletonized leaf vein visible on dried, older leaves. Sceletium is a genus with climbing or decumbent habits and succulent leaves.

Properties such as relieving stress, promoting concentration, providing serenity, avoiding inner turmoil and acting as a sedative are attributed to this beautiful plant.

The sometimes protruding idioblasts have blister-like cells. Flowers range from white or yellow to pale pink. Fruit capsules contain numerous very small kidney-shaped seeds and are brown to black in color.

Populations and individual plants are generally widely scattered, but in the Kougoedvlakte (literally translated as "Chewing Stuff Plains") of Namaqualand in the Northern Cape Province and in the Kannaland District (literally, "The Kanna Country"). In the Western Cape Province, the plants were once locally abundant and widely traded.
